As a website developer, it has always been a challenge (putting it very mildly) to deal with the Internet Explorer browser. From the beginning of web browsers, Microsoft has always tried to force their ways on everybody. For a while it worked. Do you remember the “Use Internet Explorer to view this site” messages on half of the websites you would visit?
I had to design sites to handle all other browsers – which all worked really well with one design. Then, everything had to be redesigned and recoded to work with IE. Maintenance was a nightmare and still is to some degree. It really drives me crazy having to do double the work just because of one browser.
Also, I am a Mac guy. So, to test my sites with IE, I use VMware Fusion. This allows me to run a virtual machine with Windows just so I can test out their browsers. What a pain…
For most of it’s existence, IE has been the most used browser on the web. Until now…
Google Chrome has now taken over as the most popular browser. It has taken almost 20 years, but now their is a new leader and the trend looks like it will continue.
The list of the 5 most used browsers is:
- Google Chrome
- Internet Explorer
This should be great news for web developers and hopefully the competition will now nudge IE to more closely follow the standards instead of trying to push their own way on everybody else.
